West Scranton Students Win Essay Contest

As part of Women’s History Month, which is held in April, the League of Women Voters of Lackawanna County and the Jane Kopas Women’s Center of The University of Scranton held the annual Women’s History Month Essay Contest.  The competition is open to all students in Lackawanna County in grades 7 through 12.  This year, all the winners from the county came from West Scranton High School.

The 2013 theme was “Women’s Education – Women’s Empowerment, Recognizing the Pioneering Leadership of Women and Their Impact on the Diverse Areas of Education.”  In the 7-9 grade category, the winners from West Scranton were: 1st place – Brian Martin (9th grade), 2nd place – Alexa Anzulewicz (9th grade), and 3rd place Felicia Cicco (9th grade).

In the 10-12 grade category, the winners from West Scranton were: 1st place – Cara Anzulewicz (11th grade), 2nd place – Jessica Purawic (12th grade), and 3rd place – Kimberly Graham (12th grade).

The six West Scranton students were honored at a reception at the University of Scranton on March 20, 2013.
