Thirteen MMI Preparatory School students in the German Language program participated in German Day at Penn State University’s Main Campus.

Senior Daniel DeMelfi placed first in Level 3 Spelling. The Trivia Team of Anna Hoxha, Paige Matchick, Natalie Graham, Morgan Hosier, Louis DeAngelo, Reiley DeStefano, Daniel DeMelfi, Elias Bachman, Peter Walko, Dustin Paul, Allain Benetiz, Joshua Galbiati, and Althea Stewart tied for first place.

Sophomore Louis DeAngelo was second in Level 2 Spelling and freshman Allain Benitez finished 3rd in Level 1 Poetry.

German Day is hosted by the Department of Germanic and Slavic Languages and Literatures at Penn State University. The annual event features a day of German language activities, including a poster and movie competition, a spelling bee, poetry recitation, and a German trivia game. Students also practice their German and earn prizes, learn more about studying German at Penn State, visit a German language class, and get a tour of the campus. Between 400-500 German language students from Pennsylvania high schools participated in the event. Gabriela Moustardas, World Language Department Chair and German instructor and Stella Boosalis, Librarian, served as chaperones for the trip.

This year’s overall theme was “Weimar Cinema” – an era in German film production which until this day continues to fascinate a wide audience with films like “Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari” (1920); “Der Golem, wie er in die Welt kam” (1920); “Der letzte Mann” (1924); “Metropolis” (1926); and “Die Büchse der Pandora” (1929).
