MMI seniors win National Merit Scholarships, junior qualifies for 2018 scholarship program
(Freeland, PA – May 30, 2017) –MMI Preparatory School seniors Allison McGeehan (left) and Nicholas Young (middle) both won National Merit Scholarships and junior Aaron Harman (right) qualified for the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program.
McGeehan was selected as the winner of a National Merit $2,500 Scholarship and Young received the National Merit Computer Aid Scholarship. In March, McGeehan and Young were among just 15,000 students nationwide to advance as finalists in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program and two of four finalists at MMI.
Harman was selected as a qualifier for the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program based on his performance on the 2016 Preliminary SAT (PSAT)/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
Each year, about 1.6 million juniors take the PSAT, and roughly 50,000 of those students with the highest Selection Index scores (or total PSAT scores) qualify for National Merit Program recognition–roughly the top three percent of 11th grade testers qualify for merit recognition. About 90 percent of the semifinalists attain finalist standing and about half of the finalists win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title.
Allison McGeehan is the daughter of Thomas and Sandra McGeehan, Drums; Nicholas Young is the son of Christian and Nicole Young, Freeland; and Aaron Harman is the son of Ronald and Yvonne Harman, Drums.
