MMI Preparatory School Interact Club organizes collection drive for Hurricane Harvey victims

(Freeland, PA – October 3, 2017) – MMI Preparatory School’s Interact Club collected much-needed school supplies for Humble Middle School in Humble, Texas, and partnered with the Freeland Fire Department to organize a collection drive of non-perishable food and other supplies for Hurricane Harvey victims in Texas.

Interact Club members reached out to MMI students, faculty, staff, and friends of the school to collect 12 boxes, which weighed more than 350 pounds, of school supplies that were shipped to Humble Middle School. New MMI faculty member, Robert Olive, grew up and taught middle school in Humble, which was one of the areas that was most drastically affected by the hurricane.

Additionally, club members also collaborated with the Freeland Fire Department to fill two pick-up trucks with non-perishable food, personal hygiene products, cleaning, and medical supplies. Reese Eyerly, parent to eighth grade student Chance Eyerly, and the staff at The Merrick Group, Inc. also donated a pick-up truck full of supplies as part of the collection drive.

MMI Head of School D. Scott Wiggins said, “MMI takes great pride in helping others. It was very gratifying to see both the hard work and dedication of the Interact Club members in organizing this drive and the generosity of MMI’s students, faculty and staff and the friends of our school. Robert’s connection to the Humble, Texas community further made this collection a very rewarding experience. This drive helped to educate our students about the impact they can have on the world around them.”

MMI’s Interact Club officers are Sydney Karpowich (president), Joshua Kalada-Kania (vice president), Anna Haber (secretary) and Jessica McClellan (treasurer). Faculty members Michael Scarlato and Timothy Garvey serve as club advisors. The MMI Interact Club is sponsored by the Freeland and Hazleton Rotary.
