MMI students place in Wilkes math contest
(Freeland, PA – March 20, 2014) – A team of students from MMI Preparatory School placed second in a math competition held at Wilkes University on March 5.
The 66th annual Wilkes Luzerne County Council of Teachers of Mathematics Contest included about 150 students from 15 Luzerne County schools. Contestants are juniors and seniors and are nominated by the mathematics department at their high school.
In the senior competition, MMI’s team of Jeffrey Bridges, Hazleton; Jeffrey Careyva, Ringtown; Patrick Driscoll, Hazle Township; Alexander Haber, Tresckow; and Roger Knittle, Ringtown, placed second.
In the individual competition, Jeffrey Careyva earned the second highest score in the senior competition and received a $100 prize. Roger Knittle tied for third place and received a $50 prize.
MMI math instructor Susan Moyer, who accompanied the students to the competition, serves as secretary of the Luzerne County Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
The goal of the contest is to promote the recognition of outstanding students. The Luzerne County Council of Teachers of Mathematics seeks to create and maintain an active interest in the teaching of mathematics by exchange of views and ideas pertaining to mathematics.
