Marywood University’s Art Galleries Presents the Art Exhibition by Poshya Kakil Ahmed

SCRANTON, PA (December 8, 2015)—Marywood University’s Art Galleries presents Poshya Kakil Ahmed’s exhibition, The Shadow of ISIS. The exhibition will be on display through Friday, December 18, 2015, in the Maslow Study Gallery for Contemporary Art, on the first floor lobby, in the Shields Center for Visual Arts. This exhibition is free and open to the public.

Ms. Ahmed has translated stories of victims of sexual violence by ISIS into her works in this powerful exhibition. She explains that the display was set-up in a way where the shadows of the works are larger, as the repercussions of the ISIS abuse lasts long after the violence occurs.

Sex slavery has been completely normalized in ISIS-held areas. According to an investigative report in The New York Times, “The Trade in Yazidi women and girls has created a persistent infrastructure, with a network of warehouses where the victims are held, viewing rooms where they are inspected and marketed, and a dedicated fleet of buses used to transport them.”

Ms. Ahmed was inspired by the stories and worries for the futures of the young women of her country, Kurdistan. She said, “I couldn’t be silent any more. I needed to find a way to tell the stories, and, as a graduate architecture student at Marywood University, I knew that the language of art was the best way to do that.”

The Maslow Study Gallery for Contemporary Art at Marywood University is open Monday-Friday, from 10 a.m.–3 p.m. For additional information, please visit www.marywood.edu/galleries/galleries/maslow/.
