Marywood University’s Art Galleries and the Department of Visual Arts to Present Master of Arts Exhibition
SCRANTON, PA (November 23, 2015)—Marywood University Art Galleries and the department of Visual Arts will present an exhibition by four master of arts candidates. The group exhibition features the thesis work of graduate students Amani Ashour, printmaking; Nadine Kloss-Gannon, photography; Sea Macleish, printmaking; and Natalie Seeuwen, art education.
The master of arts exhibition opens with a reception on Saturday, December 5, from 5-7 p.m., and will be on exhibit until Friday, December 18, 2015, in the Mahady Gallery on the first floor of the Shields Center for Visual Arts. Gallery hours for December are Monday through Friday, from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. The exhibit is free and open to the public.
Amani Ashour, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, received her bachelor’s degree from the Department of Home Economics in Islamic Arts Education in Saudi Arabia. She taught art in a private elementary school and started her own business producing and designing hand-made accessories for women. Her work in printmaking is a reproduction process of a design printed on paper using different printmaking techniques including dry point, linoleum cut, woodcut, serigraphy, lithography, and mono print. Islamic decoration, calligraphy, Kufic font, faces, and animals suffuse her body of work.
Nadine Kloss-Gannon, Greentown, Pa., received her bachelor of fine arts degree from East Stroudsburg University and has continued her studies at numerous photography workshops in the United States. A domestic and international flight attendant for United Airlines, Kloss-Gannon shot her photographs for the exhibition during flight layovers in England, Switzerland, South America, and the U.S. The titles of the photographs are based on airport codes that designate the particular cities she was able to explore between flights. Her digital colored photographs focus on the power and importance of line, capitalizing upon that strength to attract viewers and invite them to experience visually what she observed during her brief visits between flights.
Sea Macleish, Lancaster, Pa., received her bachelor of arts degree in art and psychology from Elmhurst College, Elmhurst, Illinois, with additional specialized studies at numerous schools and workshops. An art educator, Macleish is on sabbatical leave from Solanco High School, Quarryville, Pa., to finish her graduate studies in printmaking. Her thesis work is an intensive and literal exploration of “libre libertas” – in books there is freedom. Her body of work focuses on the question, “How can themes of comic narrative, tragic poetry, or historical culture be layered in artwork that combines books, sculptural structures and printmaking series?”
Natalie Seeuwen, Newfoundland, Pa., received her bachelor of fine arts in photography and her teaching certification from Marywood University, and is an art educator for the Stroudsburg School District. A horseback rider, Seeuwen’s body of work entitled, “Bit by Bit,” explores the equine form. The photographer Imogen Cunningham inspires her large black and white digital photographs. Seeuwen’s intention is to remove the viewer’s visual distractions, such as color, and put the focus solely on sections of the equine form to emphasize distinctive shapes.
