Marywood University’s music, theatre, and dance department will host the 10th Anniversary Festival Concert by the Junior Wind Band on Saturday, December 1, 2018, in the Sette LaVerghetta Center for Performing Arts, at 7 p.m. Three concerts will be performed by local and regional middle and high school musicians.
The Marywood University Wind Band Celebrations are independent outreach programs designed to provide support to band students (grades 7-12) and their directors. This year, middle school band students throughout the region will meet at Marywood for the 10th Annual Junior Wind Band Celebration. Over two days, these select students will study with three band conductors, Linda J. Gammon, director of the Northern Virginia Junior Youth Winds; Jennifer Hamilton, director of bands at Red Mountain High School; and David F. Semones, director of bands at Bristol Tennessee High School. The event will conclude with a free public festival performance beginning at 7 p.m. at Marywood University.
David Romines, D.M.A., event administrator, said, “The Junior Wind Band program has enjoyed significant growth from 120 students participating in one band in 2010, to 340 students performing in three bands in 2018. Marywood’s future music educators have been involved in every aspect of our ‘Celebrations,’ including pre-planning, logistics, teaching, and outreach. As the event has grown, so has the professionalism and abilities of our Marywood students. Their work at our festivals is the perfect learning laboratory and a textbook example of learning beyond the classroom.”
