Marywood University to Hold Autism Spectrum Disorder Workshop

SCRANTON, PA (September 27, 2017)—Marywood University’s Professional Continuing Education department will hold an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Workshop on Wednesday, November 15, 2017, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., in the McGowan Community Room, at the Swartz Center for Spiritual Life.

This workshop aims to raise awareness and offer practical tools for intervention with the post-graduation ASD population. Those who work with people diagnosed with ASD including audiologists, counselors, educators, social workers, speech language pathologists, and professionals seeking information in this field are encouraged to attend.

There is currently a mental health care crisis for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Individuals with ASD suffer core deficits in sensory, social, emotional and cognitive areas. While these deficits are generally identified and well supported throughout school, there are few services or support offered post-graduation. Recent research demonstrates that individuals with ASD suffer a higher rate of anxiety, stress, depression, ADHD, and suicide than the general population, yet these conditions go undiagnosed and untreated.

This course is approved for six hours of professional development ACT 48 hours, and six continuing education hours for social workers for N.J., N.Y., and Penn., LSW licensure renewal.
