Christopher Brey, Ph.D., associate professor in the science, computer science, and mathematics department at Marywood University, was recently invited to the Philly Phage Phestival at Drexel University, Philadelphia, Pa.
Dr. Brey attended the invite-only event and instructional workshops on how best to teach students to isolate and annotate their phage, also known as bacteriophage, a virus that infects and replicates within a bacterium. Dr. Brey currently teaches a lab section of this course at Marywood University.
The two-semester, discovery-based undergraduate research that Marywood’s science department has incorporated into its General Biology I and II courses for science majors, aims to increase undergraduate interest in the biological sciences through immediate immersion in authentic, valuable, and accessible research. By finding and naming their own bacteriophages, students develop a sense of project ownership and have a ready-made personal research project at a fraction of the cost of traditional apprentice-based research programs.
Dr. Brey earned his bachelor of science degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and his master of science degree from South Dakota State University. He earned his doctorate from Montana State University and completed post-doctoral research at Rutgers University and The Pennsylvania State University.
