Marywood University will host an opening reception for three exhibits on Friday, January 17, 2020, from 6 – 8 p.m., at the Mahady Gallery in the Shields Center for Visual Arts on the University’s campus. This event, as well as all three exhibits, are free and open to the public. Gallery hours are Monday – Friday 9 a.m.-4 p.m., and Saturday 1-4 p.m.
The School of Architecture Faculty Exhibition, featured in the Mahady Gallery, includes works of diverse visual, material, spatial, or haptic explorations produced by faculty of the Marywood University’s School of Architecture. These speculations, often architectural—sometimes not— represent varied interests in designed environments. From furniture to mapping, from abstract to actual, faculty showcase the ways that architects and interior architects think through the act of making. The exhibition will run from Friday, January 17, through Saturday, February 8.
Peter Hoffer: Transformations, Recent Mixed Media Work, featured in the Suraci Gallery, includes works completed in the past year and not previously exhibited. This current grouping represents Peter Hoffer’s continuing exploration of mixed media collage and related approaches. Originating as relief block prints, fragments are transformed in combination with drawing and painting applications, yielding images both lively and stylistically complex. This exhibit will run from Friday, January 17, through Saturday, February 8.
Material Structures: Select Paintings from The Maslow Collection, featured in the Maslow Study Gallery, includes works that focus on large-scale paintings that are, literally and obviously, “constructed.” They operate, not as windows into an imaginary space, but as presences that radiate out into the viewers’ space. The works are built out of various materials to reveal evidence of their own creation. Employing simple compositional devices like the grid, the rectangle, and the triangle, these works declare their existence as poetic objects that explore the expressive potential of fundamental structures, while emphatically celebrating the physicality of the painting process. Featured artists include James Biederman, Howard Buchwald, Tad Wiley, and Thornton Willis. The exhibit is co-curated by: Steven Alexander, professor of visual art and Ryan Ward, curator, The Maslow Collection. The exhibit will run from Friday, January 17, through Sunday, March 1.
