Marywood University Is Proud to Announce Student’s Fulbright Scholarship

SCRANTON, PA—Marywood University is proud to announce that Rebecca Ann Schwalb has been awarded a Fulbright Scholarship and will begin her assistantship in July working as an English Teaching Assistant in South Korea.

Ms. Schwalb, Mequon, WI, will graduate in May from Marywood University with bachelor of arts degrees in both Spanish and history.  She was awarded the Fulbright Scholarship based upon her academic achievements, her dedication to community service, and her passion for teaching English to foreign students. Ms. Schwalb said, “I would like to contribute to the ongoing cooperation between our two nations in a field that I find very important: education.”

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program awards scholarships to U.S. Graduating seniors, graduate students, young professions, scientists and artists selected through a national, merit-based competition for study and research abroad. The Fulbright English Teaching Assistant (ETA), a component of the Fulbright U.S. Student Program, places U.S. students, primarily new college graduates, as English teaching assistants in schools or universities overseas, where they increase foreign students’ English language abilities and knowledge of the United States.

Ms. Schwalb has a passion for teaching and learning languages. She speaks Spanish (fluently), Arabic, and Hebrew, and, while on a community service trip to Tanzania, was able to “pick up Swahili a little,” said Ms. Schwalb. In addition to her community service trip to Tanzania, she also traveled to Ecuador and Guatemala to volunteer, work, and intern.

Ann Cerminaro-Costanzi, Ph.D., associate professor of foreign languages at Marywood, said, “Rebecca is one of the most motivated and self-directed students I have ever had the pleasure of teaching, and I look forward to learning of Rebecca’s fellowship experiences.”
