Joseph W. Farrell, principal of Carbondale Area High School, has announced the following honor graduates of the Class of 2013:
Valedictorian
Peter Carter has been chosen as Valedictorian of the Class of 2013
Peter has had a commendable scholastic and extracurricular record while attending Carbondale Area. He is currently ranked first out of approximately 100 students in the senior class. Peter is a member of the National Honor Society and the Distinguished Honor Roll. Peter is a member of the Physics Club, Science and Technology Club, and he is President of the Student Council. He is also a member of Tomorrow’s Leaders Today and Future Business Leaders of America. Peter chaired a school district fundraiser and helped to organize a larger community fundraiser to benefit the local Make – A – Wish Foundation.
Peter will be pursuing a degree in the field of Chemical Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh.
Peter is the son of Laurie Carter, 28 Wyoming St. in Carbondale.
SALUTATORIAN – Michael Farrell is the son of Joseph and Maria Farrell.
He is a six-year member of the National Honor Society and the Distinguished Honor Roll. Michael serves as Treasurer of the Medical Careers Club. He is currently Treasurer of the Science and Technology Club. He was also a member of the Physics Club, Spanish Club, Drama Club, SADD and FBLA where he served as Treasurer. Michael was a member of the Scholastic Team and has been a member of Student Council serving as Vice-President of the Senior Class this year. He was also a YMCA Youth Board Member. Through the course of his four years at Carbondale Area, Michael has participated in Soccer where he was named captain his senior year, Cross Country, Basketball, Track and Field, and Volleyball. He was a UNICO Scranton Soccer Cup All Star. Michael has participated at the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science from 8th through 12th grade. He has received many first place and Excellence Awards for his projects there. This year he was awarded the Commonwealth Medical College fellowship, which entails a $150.00 monetary award and a 2-day fellowship to TCMC to conduct research on science related topics. After graduation, Michael plans to attend Penn State Main Campus to study Biology/Pre-Dentistry in hopes of pursuing a degree in orthodontics.
Third Academic Honor – Geno Vadella, son of Pat and Ann Vadella of Carbondale, is the third academic honor of the Class of 2013. Geno has been involved in many extracurricular activities throughout his high school career. Geno is currently a member of the Physics Club, Medical Careers and Spanish Clubs. Geno is a member of the Carbondale Area Prosper Team where he participates in child care and fund raising activities for the group.
Geno received the Bishop’s Youth Award for his leadership and service to St. Rose Church. He has also volunteered at the Carbondale Nursing Home and Assisted Living Center helping with social events. Geno participated in the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine at Villanova University. Geno has been a 6 year member of the National Honor Society as well as a six year member of the Academic Honors Program. This year, Geno was selected as a Scholastic Superstar by the Scranton Times/Tribune. Geno has also participated in sports at CA. He was on the Varsity Soccer, Basketball, Track/Field and Cross Country Teams. After graduation, Geno plans to attend Wilkes University where he will pursue a degree in Biology/Pre Med.
