MARYWOOD UNIVERSITY HOSTS “IT’S ON US” HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS WEEK

SCRANTON, PA (November 7, 2016)-Healthyrelationships and violence prevention will be the focus of Marywood University’s “IT’S ON US” Healthy Relationships Week, scheduled for Monday, November 14, through Friday, November 18, 2016.

Marywood University will, for the third year, be joining thousands of schools from around the country to take part in the national “IT’S ON US” campaign to end campus sexual assault. “IT’S ON US” is a growing nationwide cultural movement aimed at reframing sexual assault in a way that inspires people take responsibility, through big or small measures, to prevent assaults in their campus communities. The statistics on campus sexual assault are staggering: one in five women and one in sixteen men will be sexually assaulted during his or her time on campus. It is time to stand up and say no more to this epidemic.

This weeklong event at Marywood University is sponsored by the Counseling/Student Development Center, RAE (Relationship and Empowerment) Task Force, and Peers on Wellness. The goal is to engage the Marywood community by raising awareness and providing educational material to reinforce that everyone has a role to play in stopping sexual violence and in creating healthy relationships. The week will begin with an “IT’S ON US” table in the McGowan Center for Graduate and Professional Studies, on Monday, November 14, 2016, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with an online pledge, photo booth, information about the prevention of violence, giveaways, and free food. There will be a screening and panel discussion of the movie, The Hunting Ground, on Tuesday, November 15, in the Comerford Theater, in the Center for Natural and Health Sciences, from 8-10 p.m. On Wednesday, November 16, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., in Nazareth Student Center Upper Dining Hall, there will be a Talk of the University discussion on rape culture, gender roles, and how people can make a difference.  This event is free and open to the public.
