2016 Public Peace Prize Laureate Marie Dennis to Speak at Marywood University

SCRANTON, PA (September 13, 2017)—Marie Dennis, the 2016 Public Peace Prize Laureate, will present at talk, “Healing Our Wounded World: Necessity of Respect,” on Monday, September 25, 2017, at 7 p.m., in the Latour Room at the Nazareth Student Center. The talk, which is sponsored by Marywood’s campus ministry office, is free and open to the public.

Ms. Dennis is a respected icon of peace and reconciliation movements on an international scale. She has played various roles professionally, including serving on the White House Task Force on Global Poverty and Development. She has been co-president of Pax Christi International since 2007, and she served as director of the Maryknoll Office for Global Concerns from 1989 to 2012. In an attempt to bring justice and peace to a world torn apart by economic injustice, Ms. Dennis has helped raise awareness in the United States and other world bodies about the impact of various government policies in northern countries on the poorer countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

Ms. Dennis earned her master’s degree in moral theology from Washington Theological Union, and she was awarded honorary doctorates from Trinity Washington University and Alvernia University. She is author or co-author of seven books, including Oscar Romero: Reflections on His Life and Writings, St. Francis and the Foolishness of God and Diversity of Vocations.

 

Currently, Ms. Dennis serves on the national board of JustFaith Ministries; the steering committee of the Catholic Peacebuilding Network; and as a contributing editor to Sojourners magazine. She has also previously served on the advisory committee of Orbis Books; the boards of the Washington Office on Latin America, the Latin America Working Group, the International Resource Center, the Washington Office on Africa, and the Jubilee USA Network.
