Most schools in this area have already started this academic year. So that means that so have their fall sports seasons! I’m sure that the first sport you think of when I say fall is football, but that’s not the only one. There are many sports that get overlooked when talking about the fall sports season. Soccer, cheerleading, volleyball, field hockey, bowling, and golf often take the backseat during the fall. Here are some fun facts about the fall sports mentioned above.
Football, “America’s Sport”, was born from the English sports of rugby and soccer. In the 1800s, it became popular on American college campuses. The American Professional Football Association was formed in 1920; two years later it changed its name to the National Football League (NFL), which would ultimately become the major league of American football. Now, the Super Bowl is one of the most watched sports events!
Soccer has a history dating back around three thousand years in China and Japan. There is also evidence of soccer being played in the Olympic Games in Greece and Rome. Today, soccer is the most popular sport in the world—it’s played in almost every single country.
Cheerleading was started at the University of Michigan. In the United States, around 80 percent of all schools have a cheer squad. In the 1960s, NFL teams began to form cheer squads. Dance and flexibility all play an important role in being a good cheerleader.
Volleyball was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan. It was first introduced as Olympic sports in 1964. It takes some of its characteristics from tennis and handball. The first special designed ball for the sport was created in 1900.
Field Hockey was played by the British Army which spread it throughout the British Empire, which explains its popularity in India, Pakistan, Australia, and New Zealand. Field hockey is known as simply “hockey” everywhere else in the world. Pennsylvania has the highest number of field hockey players in the U.S.!
Bowling is the number one participation sport in America. The first indoor bowling lanes were built in New York City in 1840. Bowling balls were made out of wood until the early 1900s. The origins of bowling can be traced about 5,000 years back to Rome and Greece.
Golf as we know it today originated from a game played on the eastern coast of Scotland in the Kingdom of Fife during the 15th century. Players would hit a pebble around a natural course of sand dunes, rabbit runs and tracks using a stick or primitive club. Golf will be played at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro for the first time in 112 years.
