Marywood University to Hold Free Sports Safety Program
SCRANTON, PA (June 15, 2017)—Marywood University, in conjunction with Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS), N.Y., Sports Safety Program, will be hosting a free sports safety workshop. Titled “A Team Approach to Reducing ACL Injuries,” the event will be held on Tuesday, June 20, 2017, from 6:30-8:30 p.m., in the Insalaco Arena, Center for Athletics and Wellness, at Marywood University. Registration begins at 6 p.m., and the workshop is free and open to the public.
The workshop will focus on educating those directly responsible for the safety of young athletes: parents, coaches, teachers, administrators and young athletes themselves. This innovative program is designed to raise public awareness of sports-related health issues, and it is customized to the athlete’s skill level and sport type.
HSS doctors and therapists have the distinction of being the team physicians and athletic trainers for some of the top professional and college sports teams. The HSS Sports Safety ACL program is a unique public health approach to ACL injury risk management.
The benefits of young athletes participating on athletic teams can be immeasurable in terms of enjoyment, camaraderie, physical gains in strength, endurance, and flexibility, but increased training and early exposure to more competitive high demand sports have led to an increase in injuries. Knee injuries, especially those involving the ACL, are a significant concern for adolescent athletes. The ACL is one of four major ligaments that stabilize the knee. Its primary role is to prevent knee instability by keeping the tibia from sliding forward in relation to the femur.
